Our founder, Dr. Lee Brian Stuart’s journey to veterinary medicine began as a childhood dream in the suburbs of Miami, Florida. After attending local colleges in Miami and Boca Raton, he moved to Gainesville, where he earned his Bachelor of Science and then completed his Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine in 1986. (Go Gators!)

Following graduation, Lee (also known as “Doc”) began his career in Ormond Beach before realizing his lifelong ambition of opening his own veterinary hospital. That dream became reality on September 22, 1997, when Safe Haven Veterinary Hospital first opened its doors on 9 Pine Cone Drive in Palm Coast.

After diligently pursuing his vision to provide the highest standard of veterinary medicine to the community, he found that we had outgrown the small, two exam room practice. So, in 2007, he expanded the practice into the state-of-the-art facility at 30 Lupi Court, continuing his mission to provide exceptional, compassionate care to pets and their families, and becoming the only hospital in the area to become AAHA accredited.

Dr. Stuart’s professional accomplishments reflected his dedication to his craft and community. He served as Past-President of the Volusia County Veterinary Association and on the Florida Veterinary Medical Association’s Budget and Finance Committee, where his insight and leadership earned the respect of his peers across the state.

Over the years, he built not only a successful practice but a true family—of clients, colleagues, and community members who loved and respected him deeply. He was truly appreciative and often expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the clients of Safe Haven Veterinary Hospital for their friendship, warmth, love, and support throughout his years of service in Flagler County.

Tragically, in 2023, Lee was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. After a two-year battle with cancer, our founder, a beloved veterinarian, mentor, and friend, passed peacefully on September 29th, 2025, after a life devoted to healing, compassion, and community.

But for those who knew him, Dr. Stuart’s legacy reaches far beyond his credentials. An avid cyclist, amateur photographer, music lover, foodie, and self-proclaimed chef, he was known for his kindness, his quick wit, and his unwavering compassion for both animals and people. Whether treating a sick pet, comforting a worried owner, or sharing a favorite recipe with friends, Lee brought warmth, patience, and genuine care to everything he did.

Dr. Stuart’s legacy lives on in the countless pets he cared for, the families he supported, and the veterinary team he mentored and inspired. Safe Haven Veterinary Hospital continues to stand as a reflection of his vision and dedication—a place of trust, compassion, and excellence.
